HOW “MORE HAPPY THAN NOT” INSPIRED ME TO DO A PERSONAL READATHON

So I’ve just had this bright idea, right as I was reading More Happy than Not (which I absolutely love by the way).

For those of you who have not read More Happy than Not (which I would assume not a lot of people because this book has been raved about for ages), this book deals with an LGBT character suffering from anxiety and depression which caused him to do and make decisions that in end could possibly harm him.

I related so much with the main character, Aaron, not because I’m an LGBT too, but mostly because his anxiety, his insecurity, his depression, is something that is all too familiar to me. I have been in his shoes far too many times than I can count.

So anyways, so before I go off and babbling about how much I loved More Happy than Not, let me tell you the readathon that I’m doing. This is a personal readathon that I personally wanted to do because it means something to me. But that doesn’t meant that you guys can’t join me, if you want to do so.

I named the readathon,ย Read-My-Mind Readathon.

If you’re thinking this would be a readathon about mind-reading and tarot cards – it isn’t. LOL. This readathon would be more about familiarizing myself with different mental health issues through books.

There is a Mental Health Readathon already, which I wasn’t able to participate, but I checked just to be sure that the readathon I was doing is different from what they already have. Luckily, mine is a different.

But like I said, this is a more personal readathon that I’m just sharing with you guys, just in case you guys want to do it with me too.


THE RULES ARE SIMPLE.

1. JUST READ AS MUCH BOOKS ABOUT MENTAL ILLNESS AS YOU CAN.

2. COULD BE FICTION OR NON-FICTION AS LONG AS EACH BOOK IS DEALING WITH A DIFFERENT ILLNESS.

FOR EXAMPLE, I’VE RECENTLY READ MORE HAPPY THAN NOT THAT DEALS WITH SUICIDE, MY NEXT BOOK WOULD PROBABLY BE ABOUT SUBSTANCE ABUSE OR PHYSICAL ABUSE OR SCHIZOPHRENIA. SOMETHING LIKE THAT.

3. THE RULES AREN’T REALLY STRICT, SO IF YOU CAN’T FIND MENTAL HEALTH BOOKS THAT DEAL WITH OTHER MENTAL ISSUES THEN YOU CAN JUST READ WHAT’S READILY AVAILABLE TO YOU TO READ.

4. THERE ARE NO NUMBER OF BOOKS TO COMPLETE. IF YOU ONLY READ ONE, THAT’S FINE.

5. READATHON PERIOD IS FROM THE 23RD OF JULY TO THE 23RD OF AUGUST. SO THAT’S AN ENTIRE MONTH.


The main goal of this readathon is to make myself more familiar with the different kinds of mental disorder. But if in case you want to read with me, this would give you the same benefit as well.

Fiction books are often times good representation of actual situations where characters and real people share the same experience. Of course, there are some cases where this is not true, so it is also up to you to also read up on it to compare.

These are just some of the books I plan to read, which can always change depending on whether someone recommend me another book that might fit this challenge.
